With the 58th annual Eurovision Song Contest coming up in Malmö, Sweden this year, we’ve taken a look at the Facebook pages of the representatives from each country and analyzed them; from the most talented artists to the very questionable ones.
With both Semi-finals now over, the twenty countries that have made it past the first round are: Moldova, Lithuania, Ireland, Estonia, Belarus, Denmark, Russia, Belgium, Ukraine, The Netherlands, Hungary, Azerbaijan, Georgia, Romania, Norway, Iceland, Armenia, Finland, Malta and Greece. They now join the already qualified countries France, Germany, Italy, Spain, Sweden and the United Kingdom in anticipation for the finals on Saturday.
Denmark is a favorite to win with the song “Only Teardrops” by Emmelie De Forest. With an above average engagement rate, Emmelie is a regular poster who posts mainly pictures, like this one, which get a high engagement. She has a dispersed fan base, spread all over Europe, which is an advantage in this contest.
Although Denmark, Norway, Ukraine, the Netherlands and Sweden are favored to win, only one of them made it into the top 3 places in our latest ranking in terms of Facebook fans, namely the Netherlands with Anouk, placing third after Cascada (Germany) in first place and Marco Mengoni (Italy) in second.
Cezar from Romania probably has the most interesting performance with his song “It’s My Life”. Known as “The Voice”, that is exactly how he will be remembered by the audience. But his voice isn’t the only feminine feature about him; 80% of his 10 thousand fans on Facebook are female.
The most renowned representative, Cascada (Germany), has by far the most fans with 1.9 million, which is to be expected after topping the charts in over 20 countries in the last ten years. The face and voice of Cascada, Natalie Horler, posts mainly pictures of herself on the fan page, like this one. This type of post receives the most engagement from fans, with an average of 3,944 reactions per post. With most fans coming from the USA, Cascada probably has the most widespread fan base out of all representatives. In this contest, since it really comes down to your fans outside your own country, Cascada might have a head start, although her song “Glorious” does sound very similar to last year’s winner Loreen (Sweden) with “Euphoria”.
Who has the fastest growing fan page? In the last week, Takasa (Switzerland) has more than doubled their amount of fans. At a growth rate of 218% per week, their total number of fans is now at 5,821. As expected, their fans are mainly from Switzerland. However, they do seem to have an interestingly high number of fans from both Azerbaijan and Romania, which together make up over 30% of the entire fan base. Nonetheless, this did not help them in the slightest, as they didn’t make it past the Semi-finals into the finals. Better luck next time Switzerland.
Moje 3, who represented Serbia with the song, “Ljubav je svuda”, have the highest engagement rate with 16%. Along with ByeAlex (Hungary) who will sing “Kedvesem”, they also post most often with an average of 7.2 posts per day and are most successful on Saturdays. It is quite hard to say exactly what they post about, since everything is written in Serbian. They do, however, post a lot of pictures, 93.6% in fact, such as this one, which receive high engagement. They also get a lot of likes and comments on posts such as this one, where they post a picture of themselves in comparison with another artist and ask their fans to click “like” for them and to comment for the other artist. This type of post increases engagement a lot and has built up their average of about 800 reactions per post. After all that effort they put into their fan page, it didn’t end up paying off. They were eliminated from the Semi-finals and so do not qualify for the finals. Maybe they should have reconsidered how often they posted, or their content.
The representatives have also been ranked in terms of number of fans as a percentage of the entire population of their home country. Singer Valentina Monetta has the highest percentage with 8.3% of San Marino’s population as fans. Runner up was Gianluca from Malta with 3.15% of the population as fans. Germany took third place with Cascada and 2.37% of the population. It should be added, however, that not all of the fans in a fan page are from the home country of the singer. Cascada, for example, has more fans in the United States than anywhere else. Most fans do, however, come from the country of the representative.
Some artists were already on Facebook before entering the contest, while others just joined up and created a fan page for the purpose of the contest. Some representatives had too small a fan page to include in our ranking, such as Spain and Georgia, so their own country’s official fan page for the Eurovision Song Contest was used as a replacement.
For your amusement, we have put together a list of links as to what we think are the wackiest performances at this year’s Eurovision Song Contest.
- Romania, Cezar – “It’s My Life” – This song is definitely in first place. It won’t easily be forgotten.
- Macedonia, Esma & Lozanzo – “Pred Da Se Razdeni” – While Lozano’s singing would be a nice performance on its own, it is not quite certain what Esma is doing back there.
- Greece, Koza Mostra feat. Agathon Iakovidis – “Alcohol is Free” – Although definitely on the wacky side, it’s a catchy tune and a personal favourite.
- Bulgaria, Elitsa & Stoyan – “Samo Shampioni” – With an incredibly annoying voice, Elitsa should maybe consider a career in drumming instead.
- Montenegro, Who See – “Igranka” – While the chorus is quite catchy, it’s the music video that is so wacky.
