Last week’s main topic on Facebook clearly was DOMA after the Supreme Court declared that same-sex couples who are legally married deserve equal rights to the benefits under federal law that go to all other married couples. This decision is a huge step forward for gay rights.
So we saw on Facebook a bunch of very popular posts of same-sex wedding ceremonies. We saw a NYPD officer proposing to his boyfriend and hundreds of people celebrating DOMA being struck down. Cori and Kacy from “The Real L Word 2” shared their wedding picture.
And even big brands joined the historic landmark for the gay rights movement: Slimfast posted a picture which isn’t obvisious at the very first sight but strikes great as soon as you understood it.
After all these positiv reactions there are of course some people who don’t agree. The fanpage ForAmerika for instance posted a picture of a man holding a woman’s hand with the request “LIKE if you agree marriage should be between one man and one woman”. Sadly over 700.000 people agreed. Nevertheless even the president has a clear opinion. He tweeted on June 26th: “Today’s DOMA ruling is a historic step forward for #MarriageEquality. #LoveIsLove”
